Rere ki uta rere ki tai is a collaborative research project that brought together a multidisciplinary team of farmers, researchers and Mātauranga Māori practitioners (Waikato Tainui, Tuhoe) to test ideas at the forefront of soil management in order to:
- Revitalise te Taiao
- Provide practical and well researched pathways and tools for farmers to care for soils
- Respond to increasing calls from our markets to produce quality food while reducing our environmental impacts
- Honour the mana and mauri of soil.
The project was carried out on ten commercial farms around Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions and support was provided for farmers to embrace three knowledge systems (Mātauranga Māori, Western Science and practitioner knowledge/farmers) to make informed decisions about land management changes that could be implemented to lead to better outcomes. In order to show the impact of the changes, a range of metrics including social science metrics, wellbeing, productivity, profitability, GHG emissions, animal health metrics, freshwater and market access were tracked. The farmers were given opportunities to work together to identify practices that show respect for soil, learn from each other and also had opportunities to visit multiple farms that were embracing these changes.
